Donna Cromarty
Amityville Files: First off, you are related to the former owners of the Amityville house, do you know why they decided to buy a house with such surrounding controversy?
Donna Cromarty: Yes, I am the second cousin to James Cromarty. I can only render opinion here as it has been some time since 1978. However, I believe the home came on the market for a very low price so, it was a deal. My cousin grew up in the same neighborhood. He bought the home prior to the book coming out and to any “controversy” ever coming up. If you will check the closing date and when the book came out you will see this is fact.
AF: How many times were you in the home while the Cromarty family lived there?
DC: One time for my class project. However, my grandpa Jerry (James’ Uncle) was in there many times for family events. He reported wonderful parties in a beautiful home.
AF: What was the family like at the time?
DC: I would say they were warm and loving, but under stress from all the human activity outside of the house 24/7 taunting them non-stop. The human beings were the real HORROR! People would not leave the family alone. There was one story of a little old woman throwing rocks at a window and cursing the family out when they came to the door. This is the real truth no one considers!
AF: Did the Cromarty family ever say anything to you or anyone else that might indicate an evil presence within the house?
DC: Nope! The only evil was OUTSIDE the house in the form of crazy human beings obsessed with ghosts, throwing rocks at the house, ringing door bells, and harassing my family due to the movie. When I was in the home there was nothing evil in there.
AF: Tell us about the school project you did that focused on the Amityville story.
DC: It has been 30 years since I did this project so, I will try and recall what I can. I did this report for Mr O’Neill’s Massapequa High School class in fall of 1978. I went to the home with my best friend Jamie. She still lives on Long Island. She was from another school district. We were not working on the project together as some reports have misstated. She came along with me for moral support as I was nervous going into the home due to the deaths, not because I feared any evil presence. Jamie and I went to a Pentecostal church together. I was then and am now a Born Again Christian. I believe evil does exist, but we have power and authority over it in the name of Christ. There was nothing evil in there at all. It was simply a beautiful home with a tragic history. I interviewed my cousin and his wife as we went room to room. My cousin identified all the falsehoods point by point. There was indeed growling when I played the tape back during the class presentation. I was not aware it existed until the presentation. I had all to do to keep from laughing as it was funny to me. The kids in the class were scared, BUT it was due to the family poodle dogs. The growling played nicely into my report and earned me an A plus. It was like a mini Hitchcock production. Sometimes humans fear the unknown more than the known!
AF: There have been different articles written over the years that claim the audio that you recorded that day contained a growling noise every time the word “hoax” was mentioned. Is this true?
DC: No. This is a lie. I never said any such thing. The growling was caused by 2 poodles owned by my cousin. They growled at us.
AF: After hearing all the horror stories about the house, were you hesitant to even go there?
DC: I did not hear stories, I saw the movie. I was born and raised in Amityville until age 12. The inaccuracies in the film made me upset that my home town was being vilified by Hollywood. Amityville is a wonderful place… especially down by the bay where the home is. I am a Born Again Christian and I do not fear evil so, I was never hesitant. However, the thought of a innocent family perishing there was unnerving. I could not stand the fact that children died there at the hands of their own brother. The brother was the ONLY evil in that house and he was in jail. How could anyone not think about those kids?
AF: Do you know why the Cromarty family decided to leave after ten years of living in Amityville?
DC: Let me ask you this, why should anyone care if someone sells their home after 10 years? People simply move on or scale down. My cousin is up there in age now. People sell their homes every day. I think 10 years in the home says it all!
AF: Why do you believe the Amityville story continues to live on to this day?
DC: The answer to this question lies in anthropological study of human behavior. Why is it some people still believe in the Bermuda Triangle or the curse of the Pharaohs? People distrust science because they don’t understand it. There are people who want to believe in ghosts, so that is what they are going to believe NO MATTER WHAT is said or proved to be false. The real tragedy is that people forget the innocent people who died there. The only horror that existed in that home was created by Ronald DeFeo who took the lives of his own family. People should focus more on what causes humans to become so evil that they kill their own. That is where the true focus on human behavior should be studied… not some Hollywood story whose main purpose is to sell tickets and earn millions. People should try placing responsibility on human beings who commit evil deeds rather than on ghosts. It would be a much better world if everyone would be held accountable for their deeds.

I don’t know if Donna will ever read this but I want to thank her for this account. I read the original story as a child when it was printed in my newspaper. No one believes that I did but after watching a documentary yesterday that corresponded with many of the things I’ve had nightmares, about I know that I did. It’s not something I deal with daily but reading about such demonic things at such a young age has affected me. The fact that Donna is a Christian and felt nothing in the house nor did her family who lived there 10 years really helps to put it into perspective for me. I really had no idea it was a hoax. In 30 plus years would have never know if I hadn’t run across that documentary yesterday and been thinking about it–in which they never discussed it being a hoax! I was caught by the Lutz’s statement they had practiced transcendental meditation which made me think perhaps they’d brought the evil in. This morning in church it entered my mind to look it up on the internet and low and behold all the info on the hoax. So thanks to everyone who researched the facts of the case but especially thanks to Donna because your beliefs match mine, your experience really speaks to my soul.
Thank you Donna for such a level headed response. I too am a born again Christian and agree with all of what you said. I cannot say for sure what happened to the Lutz’s but as Deborah said the meditation could have been a factor. However the real tragedy is the murders and what people who subsequently owned the house have had to put up with.
I find this story toi be very fascinating however there are lots of contradictions in relation to the time the Lutz’s were in residence. I very much believe that there is a presence in ocean drive but one of non demonic or haunting capabilities. I would be very interested in the current owners and their take on the property and if they have experienced any supernatural activity. I am doing my thesis for this at uni and would greatly appreciate any information in relation to this house and its past and present. leonshelton@hotmail.com
Quit lying u know the house is haunted something problaby did happen but u don’t want to say anything because u don’t want people to be following you. MAybe u should go talk to the fuckin ghosts and maybe they can explain to you why they have cause so many god damn fuckin murders to some of the most innocent people and possessed people to the point where their lives were ruined forever. So what u need to do is shut the hell up and get your bitch ass facts straight and shove all the information up your ass.
Donna can have her opinion, but to me she’s looking very materialistic person. The USA is one of the countries most materialistic of the world and this is why is hard people believe in spirits and reincarnation.
I don’t believe Ronald killed his family because he wanted or by use drugs. I believe Ronald really was take by a sobrenatural force being a psychic guy.
All started when a guy unearthed the bones of the Indian chief a long time ago where today locates the Amityville House.
The fact is that when investigador Holzer and medium Meyers have investigated the house, they did a very good work to keep the ghosts and spirits of murder people in peace.
And there was not only spirit of the Indian chief, other spirits and spirits of the recent people killed still was there too. Then obviously that after the Cromarty moved, they might live in a most peaceful house.
If Meyers (and Albert) had not purified the house, I believe the Cromarty would have done the same thing that Lutz did, get out.
But today I don’t really know if the house is completely free of malignant forces of the ghosts or really are peaceful.
Donna could be more humble and trust and spirits. Ronald DeFeo is inocent in my opinion.
Thanks to Hans Holzer, Ethel J. Meyers and Albert. That God have them in a good place.
Excellent interview. Donna is straightforward and doesn’t play up to what a lot of people would like to hear. She just tells the truth of her own experience.
For Leon: I’m sure your thesis is finished and was interesting. I’m also sure that you found that, among various owners of the house through the years, no one but the Lutzes ever claimed to have had any such experiences.
As for Thiago, well, the less said about that chucklehead the better. Ronald DeFeo is innocent, huh? Well, like they say, there’s one in every crowd.
I have to say, Ms. Cromarty’s evasiveness regarding the reason the Cromartys left is…intriguing. On the surface it appears to be a fair response, BUT when coupled with the fact that History Channel researchers found that David Soskind (Barbara Cromarty’s son) died in 1986 and that neighbors recall seeing the ambulance arrive at the house, yet the Cromartys later claimed he died in 1987, AFTER they moved out, well…something’s rotten in Denmark. According to Erci Walter, Laura DiDio found some documents in the Amityville historical record indicating there was in fact some type of Indian burial ground in the area; said documents later disappeared (this was long after the Lutzes had left). Why the cover up? Further, according to Daniel Farrands, several residents told him things off camera regarding happenings at the house after the Lutzes left but refused to do so on the record for fear of being ostracized from the community. I’m not saying anything did or didn’t happen, but there are clearly people trying to see to it that certain things are kept under wraps, all the time mocking those who try to get at the truth.
I have been studying this story for quite a while, and I think the house really was haunted between November 1974 and early 77. Just because the Cromarty family said nothing strange happened to them does not prove that the Lutz story it is a hoax. Something frightening DID happen to the Lutz family. The media blew the story out of proportion, and the film was exaggerated ( the 2005 film a gross exaggeration )
I can’t agree with Thiago. Ronnie DeFeo killed his family because he wanted to. He was not possesed. The house was not haunted before the murders. The haunting happened afterwards. The family was having many problems, and Ronnie was using heroin and LSD. He had also stolen a large sum of money that belonged to his family. There was a heated argument. My theory is that he killed his father, then because there were witnesses he killed the rest of his family to shut them up. There is some speculation Dawn ( his younger sister ) helped him with the killings, then he killed her.
Ronnie killed his family, he was responsible, he is guilty. As for AH being a “proven hoax”, that is not true. Nobody has proven that the Lutz family are liars. George and Kathy Lutz did not admit it was a hoax before they died, that is an untruth. They both passed stringent lie detector tests in regard to the haunting.
The house is not haunted now. However, I can’t understand why the Lutz family or the Cromarty’s wanted to buy a house where six people had been murdered. Very strange!
